THE FREE STATE, with 2.8-million residents, accounted for 5% of South Africa’s population in 2017/18 and contributed proportionately to the GDP. In 2018 (the latest available data), the real economy (represented by agriculture, mining, manufacturing and construction) made up 27% of the Free State’s output. The largest real-economy sector was mining at 11% of the provincial economy, followed by manufacturing at 9%, agriculture at 4% and construction at 3%. The Free State contributed 10% of national agriculture and 7% of national mining, but just 4% of national manufacturing and 3.5% of national construction.

The local municipality leased the land to the beneficiaries and it is situated in the Mafube Local Municipality in the Fezile Dabi District, in the town of Frankfort. The project is currently not in function as the processes of converting it to layer production is about to take place PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project was funded by Department of Agriculture and Rural Development with 2 x 40 000 capacity broiler houses in the year 2013/14. The co-op has five houses each with a capacity of 40 000 birds with the ability to produce 200 000 live birds per cycle with a mortality of ±5% under commercial production practices. Virginia Mega Poultry was established with the intention of creating jobs, alleviating poverty and inequality, and improving the livelihoods of previous disadvantaged people. Importantly, the Department invested heavily in the state-of-the-art infrastructural development to ensure that the farming business reaches its predetermined objectives PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project currently has 18 beneficiaries and the infrastructure is four years old. The project is situated on Virginia farm, a commonage, ±5km from Meloding. The farm is 663ha in size, of which 309ha is arable and 354ha is for grazing. However, the co-operative is utilising only 9ha of the total area as per its lease agreement with Matjhabeng Local Municipality FINANCED BY: Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development PROJECT STATUS: The project will be selling its chickens to the following markets: Ismail Poultry situated in Gauteng Province; PM Foods situated in Limpopo Province; Amalesco situated in Odendaalsrus; Chicken Lady situated in the North West Province; and locally. Negotiations will be required to secure formal contracts.
