The 2025/26 edition of North West Business marks the 13th publication of this highly successful journal that, since its launch in 2009, has established itself as the premier business and investment guide for the North West Province in South Africa.

Development financeand SMME supportWinning with waste.Asmall business focussing on waste management hasreceived a big gift in the form of a huge truck and trailer.Rambait Trading and Enterprises traded for a decadeusing rented trucks, trailers and bins, expanding thebusiness beyond hazardous waste to general scrap waste andrecycling. Rustenburg Smelter, a Glencore Ferroalloys operation,recently decided to award Rambait a three-year contract as part ofthe company’s Enterprise and Supplier Development Programme,which aims to ensure that entrepreneurs are empowered with therelevant technical knowledge and helps them acquire assets whichwill support the growth of their businesses. The truck and trailer,valued at more than R3-million, will allow Rambait founder andmanaging director, Mpho Magano, pictured, to further expand thereach of the business.Waste management is a good area for corporates and largecompanies to promote new businesses in the communitieswithin which they operate. The head office of Moli & Mela Groupis located at the Recycling Site of the Sun City Resort in the MosesKotane Local Municipality, which is part of the Bojanala PlatinumDistrict Municipality. A first contract to handle waste managementfor Sun City at the 2022 Nedbank Golf Challenge kickstarted whathad been a small venture to a company that now employs morethan 50 people, and counts among its clients WBHO, McDonald’sand Spar.As one of the biggest enterprises in the province, mining companyImpala Rustenburg naturally makes a big impact on the provincialSECTOR INSIGHTThe Provincial Governmenthas allocated R6-million tosupport SMMEs.economy through its supplychain. The company’s Enterpriseand Supplier Development (ESD)Programme has similarly hada big impact. OVERVIEWMore recently, Impala Rustenburg has opened an Economic InclusionCentre (EIC) to serve as a small business hub for mine-communitySMMEs. It offers shared facilities and a number of services, ranging fromfunding facilitation to advice on market access.A construction company that had a total of six employees, two ofwhom were permanent, has increased its payroll to 22 on the back of acontract secured with Sun City. CPKM Services, run by Charlotte Mosito,had previously done sub-contracting work on drains, road constructionand indoor security fencing but being part of an expansion project atSun City, Lefika Villas, marks a significant step up for the BCom BusinessManagement graduate who has also completed a ConstructionManagement short course through UCT.The first phase of development of Lefika Villas started in 2022. Thefinished project will comprise 48 three-bedroom villas and 10 fourbedroomvillas, providing accommodation for an additional 400 guests.State supportIn the 2024/25 financial year, the North West Provincial Governmenthas prioritised young people in its awarding of infrastructure contractsand employment. In addition, close to 900 internships and learnershipsbenefitted young people in various departments, municipalities, stateownedentities and SETAs in the North West.An amount of R1.4-million was set aside to train women-led cooperativesand to support them in growing their businesses. A furtherR4.5-million was allocated to help SMMEs get access to markets.During 2023/24, women contractors were appointed to build 532houses with a budget of R289-million.Having access to foreign markets goes a long way to creating abigger business out of a small business. With many interventions in theSMME sector being designed to give small business owners access tothe mainstream economy, the Export Awareness Workshops, jointlyhosted by the North West Development Corporation (NWDC) and theNational Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic), wasan important event for small businesses in the province.Workshops covered every aspect of the exporting process forinterested business owners.
