OVERVIEWManufacturingKathu Industrial Park is ideally located for manufacturers.Anglo American Kumba Iron Ore, as part of its Corporate SocialInvestment programme, initiated a study into the establishmentof an Industrial Park in Kathu. This project has been given thegreen light and it is inviting tenants to take up varied rentaloptions with the park. The location of the park, at the centre of the resource-rich Postmasburg-Hotazel iron-ore and manganese corridor, means that early tenants of thepark are likely to be in mining services or logistics. With many solar andwind farms nearby, the renewable energy sector also holds greatpromise. The intention is to encourage manufacturing and the IndustrialDevelopment Corporation is a strategic partner. The project has beenincluded in national government’s National Infrastructure Plan, StrategicIntegrated Project 5 (SIP5, Saldanha-Northern Cape Development Corridor).Agriculture and solar farms are doing well in the current era but thereopening of a manufacturing plant in De Aar by Colossal ConcreteProducts, pictured, is of huge significance for the regional economy. Theprevious owners of the facility that made precast concrete products forthe railways, Aveng Infraset, mothballed the factory but the acquisitionof that company by a consortium comprising Colossal Africa Group,Mafoko Holdings, Clone Capital and Randvest Capital has made possiblethis reset. The catalyst was the signing by Colossal Concrete Products of a oneyearcontract with Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) to supply precast concreterailway sleepers for the parastatal’s network upgrade. South Africa’s (and theNorthern Cape’s) renewableenergy sector is now achievingthe kind of critical mass wheremanufacturing makes sense. Inthe neighbouring Eastern Capeprovince, Nordex is building awind tower plant in Humansdorpwhich will create 300 jobs. De Aar’scentral location will again playa role in helping get productsto market and gives Colossala major advantage.Over and above rail andrenewable energy, manyconstruction companies inthe Northern Cape (and theadjacent provinces of theFree State and Eastern Cape)will be glad of the concreteprecast manufacturing plantbeing back in business. The same is true for provincialand local governments intenton improving and buildingnew infrastructure. The long legacy of mining inthe Northern Cape means thatthe skills supporting the sectorare still available. The foundrybusiness that De Beers startedin 1891 is still supplying mininghouses in South Africa andother parts of the world. KewFoundries has also suppliedsheave wheels to one of India’slargest hydroelectric projects. ■NORTHERN CAPE BUSINESS 2025/2648PHOTO: Colossal Concrete Products
