A BETTER LIFE THROUGH ACCREDITATION The South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) is the only national body responsible for carrying out accreditation in respect of conformity assessment, as mandated by the Accreditation for Conformity Assessment, Calibration and Good Laboratory Practice Act (Act 19 of 2006). As South Africa’s national Accreditation Body for Conformity Assessment, SANAS is committed to the following objectives: Accrediting or overseeing organisations within its mandate to ensure compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards; Promoting accreditation as a strategic tool to facilitate international trade and support the country’s economic performance and transformation goals; Advancing the competence and mutual recognition of accredited bodies; Supporting the capability and global equivalence of facilities that comply with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) principles.
SANAS accreditation is a strategic mechanism obligated to evaluate and confirm that accredited Conformity Assessment Body (CABs) are competent to implement government policies and regulations, that ensures public protection and trust in areas that matter most, such as: Quality Health & Safety Environmental Protection SANAS supports green innovation by accrediting laboratories and inspection bodies involved in environmental testing and energy efficiency. Together with metrology and standardisation, Conformity Assessment and Accreditation form the cornerstone of South Africa’s quality assurance. They ensure that products and services meet the highest standards of competence, safety, and compliance. Through international partnerships, SANAS facilitates access to global markets for sustainable South African goods and services, boosting local economies and production. SANAS has proudly accredited more than 2,187 Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) -across South Africa and beyond - ensuring trust in local and international markets. As South Africa’s sole national accreditation body, SANAS plays a pivotal role in enhancing the country’s economic performance, international trade, and public trust by ensuring that Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) meet globally recognized standards. SANAS has international recognition with both the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF). We are one of the Accreditation Bodies (ABs) that are founding signatories to both the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) and the IAF Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MRA). This means that test reports, calibration certificates, and certification documents issued by organisations accredited by SANAS are recognised and accepted globally by other signatories to these arrangements. This international recognition is crucial for South African trade, as it assist to reduce or eliminate the need for retesting or recertification of products when they are exported to other countries that are also signatories to the ILAC and IAF arrangements.
