S editor’s note

S editor’s note Serving the nation It was in his inaugural address that President Kennedy made his famous call to service: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Service is defined as the contribution to the welfare of others (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Research shows that serving others results in a stronger sense of purpose and that we are at our best when we help others. Martin Luther King said, “Make a career of humanity – and you will make a greater person of yourself, a greater nation of your country and a finer world to live in.” Service has the power to bridge divides and to unite people in meeting our nation’s challenges. By serving humanity, we serve our nation. “There is no greater challenge and there is no greater honour than to be in public service,” says Condoleezza Rice. In this issue, we look at what the country has done for us, as we delve into the status of the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) programme on page 10 – expected to play a substantial role in supporting the country’s recovery plan. SEZs are at the core of the reimagined industrial strategy, which is purposefully structured to stimulate investment. The SEZs are found in local, district or metropolitan municipalities and to succeed, municipalities must be a part of their execution. As such, the local government sector is serving our nation. Growing global uncertainty regarding pandemics, technology and climate change, poverty, inequality and insecurity are driving countries to serve their national interest by revisiting their foreign policies. Values, interest and power should shape South Africa’s policy (page 18). Policy goes some way to tackling poverty and inequality, but more is needed (page 26). The pandemic has caused a sharp decline in growth and a significant increase in unemployment. Job creation relies on the economic growth of a country. The government has drafted a Critical Skills List containing a list of skills that South Africa needs to attract to grow our economy and in turn create more job opportunities for all (page 28). Let’s work with our government in building a strong nation. Let’s serve South Africa. All that remains is to leave you with another great issue of Service and these words from Nelson Mandela: “Whether you change the linen or stitch up wounds, cook the food or dispense the medicines, it is in your hands to help build a public service worthy of all those who gave their lives for the dream of democracy.” Alexis Knipe Editor “There is no greater challenge and there is no greater honour than to be in public service.” – Condoleezza Rice Editor: Alexis Knipe | Publishing director: Chris Whales | Managing director: Clive During | Online editor: Christoff Scholtz | Design: Simon Lewis Production: Aneeqah Solomon | Ad sales: Venesia Fowler, Tennyson Naidoo, Tahlia Wyngaard, Norman Robson and Tanya Duthie Administration & accounts: Charlene Steynberg, Kathy Wootton | Distribution & circulation manager: Edward MacDonald | Printing: FA Print Service magazine is published by Global Africa Network Media (Pty) Ltd | Company Registration No: 2004/004982/07 Directors: Clive During, Chris Whales | Physical address: 28 Main Road, Rondebosch 7700 | Postal: PO Box 292, Newlands 7701 Tel: +27 21 657 6200 | Email: info@gan.co.za | Website: www.gan.co.za No portion of this book may be reproduced without written consent of the copyright owner.
