Welcome to the 13th edition of the South African Business journal. First published in 2011, the publication has established itself as the premier business and investment guide to South Africa, supported by an e-book edition and website at www.southafricanbusiness.co.za. A special feature in this journal focusses on the vital focus on infrastructure that is seizing the attention of the political and business leadership of South Africa. This is not the arena of endless talk shops. Rather, 160 CEOs of some of the country’s most influential companies are rolling up their sleeves and trying to make things work better. The article looks at steps being taken by a combination of the public and private sectors to beef up the country’s railways, ports and energy network. Crime is also under the spotlight. As this journal goes to print, South Africa will ascend to the presidency of the G20, a singular honour and an opportunity for the country to put its best foot forward. A brief overview of each of the country’s provinces is also provided. South African Business is complemented by nine regional publications covering the business and investment environment in each of South Africa’s provinces. The e-book editions can be viewed online at www.globalafricanetwork.com. These unique titles are supported by a monthly business e-newsletter with a circulation of over 35 000. The Journal of Africa Business joined the Global African Network stable of publications as an annual in 2020 and is now published quarterly.

Additionally, SAW offers a morecontrolled and efficient process compared tomanual-gas-tungsten-arc welding (GTAW) andshielded-metal-arc welding (SMAW), which rely ongas and flux-coating respectively for arc protection.Steinmüller Africa’s comprehensivefabrication offering includes submergedarcwelding (SAW), a method where thearc is submerged under a blanket of flux inpowder form. While this process is well establishedin the industry, Steinmüller Africa’s exclusiveequipment has extended the process to moreapplications such as fabricating membrane wallsfor boilers, for example. With advanced machinery, including one ofthe only two PEMA machines in the country andthe only Oerlikon SAW stub-welding machine inSouth Africa, among others, the company is wellequipped. Using this machinery, Steinmüller Africacan provide its clients with fast and cost-effectiveturnkey fabrication solutions. SAW ensures minimalweld repairs and offers a faster weld solution, increasing plant uptime. These capabilities positionSteinmüller Africa to deliver welding services toeffectively meet the growing demands of theenergy and industrial sectors.Steinmüller Africa’s expertise is supported by itsfleet of three boom welders, the Oerlikon weldingmachine for header-to-stub welds and the PEMAmachine, pictured right, which features six weldingheads for welding membrane walls, offering morecapacity. SAW has few limitations barring those inpositionwelding, however. Components can beAn ideal solutionWith the change in available consumables suchas flux and gas and Steinmüller Africa’s exclusivecutting-edge technology, SAW can effectively beused across a range of applications. These factorsmake the company the ideal solution provider forclients’ welding requirements.Although SAW offers numerous advantages,it comes with challenges including moistureabsorption in the flux and position of welding.Steinmüller Africa overcomes these challenges byadhering to rigorous standards: the flux is bakedaccording to the manufacturer’s guidelines andkept hot during welding to prevent moistureabsorption. Welding parameters are carefullydetermined during planning and are strictlymonitored throughout the process.Operating SAW machinery requiresspecialised expertise. To ensure compliance withall governing standards and to ensure optimalmachinery use, Steinmüller Africa provides inhousetraining for its welders. With successful welding services andinstallations at various Eskom Power Stationsand Sasol, Steinmüller Africa continues toset the benchmark for excellence in SAWapplications, reinforcing its position as aleader in the industry. Senior Welding EngineerFriedrich Schwim highlights, “SteinmüllerAfrica is always investigating opportunitiesto optimise component fabrication to ensurethe highest quality and cost-effectiveness. Wealso ensure faster manufacturing times whileremaining competitive with fabrication costsin the industry”. ■SOUTH AFRICAN BUSINESS 202562
